Okapia INFINITY X Review: Battery Life At Its Best

Okapia’s mission is to provide quality smartphones at affordable prices to its customers. We took an in depth look at their INFINITY X handset whose main highlight is an enormous 5,000mAh battery that lasts for ages. The device retails for Tk/-8,690 and can be purchased directly from Bikroy.com Keep reading below for our thoughts and opinions on the device.

Display

With a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, the 5 inch IPS display of the INFINITY X won’t win any awards. The 240ppi pixel density lets you see some pixelation at average viewing distances but at the price, this is pretty good. Viewing angles on the display are decent and the panel actually gets very bright so outdoor visibility is not an issue here. On the other hand, the screen does not get very dim leading to sore eyes with prolonged use in the dark. okapia ships the INFINITY X with a plastic screen protector installed which is always a plus for the consumer.

Design & Hardware
The INFINITY X is a very ordinary looking device with some shiny plastic trim around the sides which make it look a tad bit appealing. The back is removable and has a matte finish. If you look very very closely, you should notice a faint criss-cross pattern. Centered along the top of the back is the camera with the same plastic finish. The power and volume buttons are found on the left hand side and they too are made of the shiny plastic. The buttons are responsive but also a bit mushy. Nevertheless, they are within comfortable reach of the thumb. The capacitive keys lining the bottom of the display do not light up.

Although you can take off the plastic back, the massive 5,000mAh battery is sealed in and not removable. Below the battery lies the speaker which is adequately loud. Around the top you will find the dual SIM card slots as well as the microSD card slot.

Due to the large battery, the INFINITY X is thick at 10.3mm. The thickness never caused the phone to feel uncomfortable in the hand. In fact, the device has a very reassuring weight that makes it feel durable.

Inside the box, okapia throws in a flip cover as well as an OTG cable which you can connect to your INFINITY X to charge another smartphone. The flip cover is easy to install (remove the plastic back and snap on the flip cover in its place) and feels quite nice. The chrome like “okapia” logo along the bottom right is also a nice touch. The flip cover has a leather like finish. It was used throughout the review period and held up very well.

Performance
The INFINITY X surprised us here as we were not expecting much from it due to the 1GB of RAM. A 1.3GHz quad-core processor lies inside the device along with an MT6582 M GPU. You get 8GB of built in storage along with microSD expansion.

The games we used to rest the INFINITY X were Modern Combat 5, Asphalt 8: Airborne, Badland and Alto. We started off with Alto and Badland which the INFINITY X handled with ease. We nervously moved onto Modern Combat 5 and were floored when the INFINITY X tackled this game with very little frame drops. This is exactly what we were trying to say in a previous blog post where we talked about how midrange and even budget smartphones can handle what expensive flagships can albeit with some caveats.

The 5,000mAh battery was stellar and is the main attraction of the INFINITY X. You can easily make it through a full day and a half on a consistent basis and even up to two and a half days with conservative use. We are glad that okapia also threw in an OTG cable to show off the reverse charging capabilities.

The INFINITY X runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. While we are awaiting the arrival of Android N, KitKat feels dated in terms of aesthetics. On the other hand, this was one of the most stable and reliable builds of Android and is always a pleasure to use. okapia implemented a slight skin on the notifications, settings and quick toggles but other than that everything is pure stock Android. As a bonus, you get the option to utilise a multitasking toggle which lets you watch a video, choose music, jot down a quick note or check email in a small window on top of your current activity. Double tap to wake also makes a welcome appearance here.
Camera

The main camera is a 5 megapixel BSI sensor with autofocus and comes with an accompanying single LED flash while the front facing camera is a 2 megapixel unit. Images taken in broad daylight actually turned out great with nice detail and colour reproduction. As the light gets dimmer, things diminish quickly. The same can be said for the front facing camera.

Conclusion
The Okapia INFINITY X is a reliable smartphone with an affordable price tag at Tk/-8,690. It is simple yet powerful with the aid of its monstrous battery. The device was used whilst on a trip abroad and the long battery life definitely helped keep us stress free. The included flip case and OTG cable are welcome additions. While paying a little more will net you an HD display and slightly better camera, the battery is what okapia is focusing on here. To round things up, the INFINITY X is excellent as a weekend warrior or as a secondary phone.
