With the digital revolution in Bangladesh, online trading is on hype. In today’s fast-paced world and the current shutdown situation, visiting the physical haat for trading Qurbani animals poses a huge health risk.
This is why the livestock market in Bangladesh targeting Eid-ul-Adha goes online. Bikroy.com is the pioneer of arranging online buying and selling of Qurbani animals. Besides, several online platforms and private organizations are getting involved in selling Qurbani animals online these days.
In this infographic, we will analyze and evaluate some aspects of the trends in the livestock market in Bangladesh, based on Bikroy user data in 2021.
Which cities have the most livestock selling ads in Bangladesh?
According to the infographic, we can see that major cities in the country hold most of the advertisements. Due to the rapid urbanization and population growth, the numbers will vastly increase in the upcoming years.
The majority of listings for both cows and goats are being posted from the capital city Dhaka according to our data. About 27% of the ads are posted from this region. Rajshahi comes a close second with 19% of the entire ads. Khulna is third with 16% and Sylhet is fourth with 13% followed by Chattogram, Rangpur, Barishal, and Mymensingh with 12%, 6%, 3%, and 3% respectively.
How much are people willing to spend on cows?
Being the largest marketplace in Bangladesh, Bikroy.com gets thousands of livestock selling posts. Among them, we can see there are several price groups one can choose from according to their demand and budget.
Based on the statistics, almost half of the ads for cows on Bikroy have a price tag of BDT 1 lac – 5 lac. One of the reasons why most cows on Bikroy fall into this price range is that many ads are coming from households besides farm owners.
26% of livestock advertisements are posted below BDT 50,000. There are also some livestock ads ranging between BDT 50,000 to 1 lac and between BDT 5 lac and 10 lac with 22% and 6% respectively.
Livestock listing based on inventory
As the infographic shows, more cows and goats are being listed and sold on Bikroy each year.
In 2017, the number of livestock posted during the Qurbani season was 5,420 of which 1,544 were sold. In 2018, the number of livestock posted during this season was 7,246 of which 2,293 were sold. In 2019, there were 9,331 livestock ads posted among which 2,889 were sold.
Due to the current pandemic, the numbers have seen a down growth in 2020, where 2,085 animals have been sold from 8,070 ads. In 2021, there were 8,147 ads posted so far and more ads are being posted each day. Among the posted ads, almost 1,320 animals are already booked as per our information. Trend wise the sales number has doubled so far. However, the actual sold cow number might be higher by the end of the Qurbani season.
Which type of livestock are Bangladeshi consumers searching mostly for?
As beef is one of the most popular, delicious, and reasonably cheap meat items considered by the Bangladeshi people, we can see the shade in the advertisements here in Bikroy as well.
There are almost thrice as many cow ads on Bikroy as a contrast to goat ads. According to the statistics, Birkoy has 73% cow and 27% of goats among all livestock advertisements, with the numbers rising each day.
