The New and Improved iPhones

Share

Apple has been known for constant innovation in the smartphone market. With each iPhone iteration, Apple improves numerous specifications to deliver a smarter mobile device. With the release of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple has delivered a new design to compete with other smart phones. That being said, is it any better than other phones on the market?

Mobile phones have changed drastically in design since the advent of the iPhone in 2007. Samsung Phones, like the Galaxy S5, offer a much larger screen. For years, Apply has been adamant about their small screen size. However, this has changed with the new design.

Design

The Apple iPhone 6 sports a new 4.7 inch display. It’s a considerable jump from the previous model’s 4 inch display. This new jump may be difficult to adjust to at first, but the new size adds valuable screen real estate for media. The Apple iPhone 6 Plus on the other hand, has a 5.5 inch display. It’s a massive departure from the original iPhone’s size, allowing the 6 Plus to compete with the ever growing smart phone market.

Beyond the size different, both phones are slimmer than their predecessor. The iPhone 6 is a mere 6.9 mm with the iPhone 6 Plus at 7.1 mm. The body of the phones are identical. They both have an aluminum body with similar physical buttons that iPhone users are familiar with.

Display

The big improvement with display lies within the iPhone 6 Plus. While many expected the iPhone 6 Plus to be a blown up version of the iPhone 6, this smart phone is a great phone in its own right. With a screen resolution of 1920×1080, the device can produce crisp and clear images. When compared to the Samsung Galaxy S5, the iPhone 6 Plus display is the same.

Both of the iPhone 6 models have Apple’s HD Retina display that offers high contrast and brightness. In addition to improvements on the viewing angle due to dual domain pixels, both iPhone 6 models have an improved polarizer to view media in any lighting condition.

Processing Power

Both models have Apple’s new processing chip: the 64-bit A8. Its improved processing will allow for faster loading times and less lag. Compared to Samsung’s flagship device, the iPhone 6 models are slow in terms of speed. The Galaxy S5 has a 2.5 GHz quad-core processor. When compared to the A8’s estimated 1.4 GHZ processing speed, Samsung’s smart phone is the clear winner. That being said, the new iPhone processing chips aren’t slow by any means.

Camera

The iPhone’s camera is one of the most popular cameras in the world. Both iPhone 6 models have improved cameras. The 8 mega pixel cameras has improved focus and face detection. Massive improvements have been made to video capture. Both models can now shoot full 1080 HD at 60 frames per second. Additionally, the iPhone can now shoot slow motion 720 p at 240 frames per second. The iPhone 6 Plus has an additional feature of image stabilization. With the larger size, the phone may be difficult to hold when taking a photo. Apple has included advanced image stabilization to this model to ensure that a crisp image is produced.

While the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have a great camera, it is no match to Samsung’s smartphone camera. The Galaxy S5 has a 16 mega pixel camera to provide ultra clear images. That being said, with Apple’s improvements on its aperture, stabilization, and exposure, it is still a great camera for casual shooting.

Battery Life

Apple has made great improvements on battery life with the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 Plus has a better battery life. Due to its larger screen size, Apple was able to include a larger battery. It has up to 384 hours of standby time compared to the 250 hours of the iPhone 6. With 24 hours of talk time on 3G and 80 hours of audio playback, the iPhone 6 Plus has a great battery that will provide enough juice for use throughout the day.

The batteries are a massive improvement upon the issues experienced with the Apple iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 had a notoriously bad battery. In fact, Apple is offering free battery replacements to early models due to a fault in the battery’s performance. As of now, the battery of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are a great improvement. However, only time will tell if another issue is imminent.

Features

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus includes the new IOS 8. This operating system contains a number of new features for iPhone users. It seamlessly integrates with other Apple devices, including the upcoming Apple Watch. Those who are familiar with the IOS operating system will enjoy the new features, but appreciate the familiarity.

Apple has also included a new feature called Apple Pay. This feature allows owners to use their phone as a credit card payment method. Credit cards are loaded onto the phone and used on NFC readers. With identity verification through Apple’s Touch ID, this payment method is quick and easy. While Samsung has incorporated NFC payment and fingerprint sensors onto the Galaxy S5, Apple seems to be gaining more traction in this area. Many retailers and banking companies have begun to implement this payment method into their systems. It remains to be seen if either Apple or Samsung will excel in this new feature.

All in all, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are great phones. They improve upon the features of the iPhone 5 while giving faithful iPhone users new things to be excited about. While the Samsung Galaxy S5 does have better specifications, it’s all up to user preference. Samsung and Apple both have great smart phones. Those familiar with the iPhone will enjoy the new models and all they have to offer.
