Traveling with Your Pet: What to Do to Ensure a Safe Journey
You must feel guilty whenever you plan your vacation without your pet because traveling with pets is always a challenge and risky concern for pet owners. But if you make some extra preparations, you can ensure a safe journey for your pet and take them everywhere with you. The preparations are based on 3 stages: before, during, and after the journey.
Before the Journey
First, pack enough food and water in airproof packages. Take extra food and water in case of journey delays. Also, make sure you pack the meal and water bowls as well.
Next, if your vet prescribes any medicine for the journey, pack it. Other favorite items of your pet, i.e., bedding, blanket, and toys will also need packing to keep your pets entertained and stress-free.
Besides, always remember to get a collar, a leash, and an ID tag to minimize the risk of losing your pet. Do not forget litter bags and pee pads, too. You should also take a first aid kit containing Viodin ointment, Nebanol or similar powder, brush, nail clipper, bandage, etc. in case your pet gets hurt during the journey.
Finally, prepare documents, i.e., pet passport, health certificate, vaccination certificate, and others required by the transportation mode. Consult with your vet to get assistance with the papers.
During the Journey
To make sure your pet is comfortable during the journey, choose a large and wide carrier or crate with proper air ventilation.
Then, if you travel by bus, train, or plane, see which companies allow pets. Read their policies thoroughly and choose a suitable option for your pet. Book your tickets early to ensure your pet has an individual seat. In the case of birds, you may prefer cargo services during a plane journey.
However, a carrier is not mandatory if you travel by private transportation.
Next, remember to give your pet some rest and potty breaks during the journey intervals. Put them on a leash so they do not run away.
During your vacation, choose a hotel that accommodates pets. Book a well-secure room to ensure your pet’s safety.
After the Journey
Get your pet back to their regular lifestyle after the vacation. If you notice anything unusual in their behavior or health, consult your vet immediately.
